Back the forge

Smedjan is one engineer's engine — MIT-licensed, with no company and no venture money behind it. Sponsorship buys GPU hours and the time to keep building open infrastructure that lets anyone own their own language models.

// 01

Why it matters

the case

Owning a language model shouldn't require a Python stack, a cloud account, or somebody else's API. Smedjan exists so a person, a lab, or a company can train, run, and own a model end to end — on their own hardware, disconnected from the world if they want. Independent infrastructure only stays independent if it's funded independently.

What your money buys

GPU and Apple-Silicon hardware hours for development and benchmarking, kernel and backend work, documentation, and the maintainer's time — kept free of any framework or vendor you don't control.

What you get back

A stack you can read end to end, no lock-in, portable checkpoints, and a maintainer who answers. Sponsors shape what gets forged next.

Sponsorship tiers

monthly, via GitHub Sponsors

Spark $5 / mo

A place on the sponsors wall and the warm glow of keeping independent infrastructure alive.

Ember $25 / mo

Everything in Spark, plus your handle credited in the repo and a vote in monthly roadmap polls.

Forge $100 / mo

Your logo on smedjan.dev and the repo, priority on issues you open, and early access to release candidates.

Foundry $500 / mo

For companies: logo placement, a direct line for questions, and real influence over the roadmap — ideal if Smedjan is in your stack.

Tiers and amounts are a starting point and may change. One-time sponsorships are welcome too.

Partner with Smedjan

for companies

Building private, on-prem, or air-gapped language models for your product or your team? Smedjan is a natural fit — pure Rust, two GPU backends, no Python runtime to ship. I take on a small number of collaborations: custom features, integration support, and sponsored development. Especially keen to work with teams in the Swedish market.
